If you love the tartness of buttermilk or have some extra lying around, you'll love this buttermilk French toast.
This buttermilk French toast is a delicious recipe that has a perfect blend of sweetness to counter the tartness in the buttermilk. It is a great way to use up any leftover buttermilk you may have or just a perfect morning breakfast.
This French toast is similar to the classic French toast, but the buttermilk adds a subtle tang to the flavor.
We used Texas toast, which are thick slices of bread and are perfect for feeding hungry kids in the morning.
Tips
If you don't have buttermilk, you can make a substitution by mixing 1 ½ tablespoons of vinegar into a large glass measuring cup and filling up to the 1 ½ cup line with regular milk.
When cracking your egg, if some of the eggshell falls in and you are having a difficult time removing it. Try using a large piece of eggshell and holding onto it, put it next to the eggshell you are trying to remove. It should move right next to the large piece and make it easier to remove.
You can find Texas toast at your grocery store in the bread area. If you have difficulties finding it you can substitute it out for French bread or even sandwich bread.
Favorite toppings
Everyone has their favorite topping they like to add to their French toast. Here are a few of our favorite:
- berries - strawberries, blueberries, even huckleberries or blackberries. They are all a tasty topping. If you don't have fresh berries, you can heat frozen berries in a saucepan on low to defrost them.
- Fresh fruit - if you have some fresh fruit, it's really good sliced on top of the French toast. Stone fruits such as peaches or nectarines are delicious.
- Syrup - our favorite is either real maple syrup or huckleberry syrup. Any syrup tastes great on these though.
Favorites pairings
You can pair French toast with so many items and make it into a big breakfast. Here are some of the traditional pairings that are all delicious!
- small bowl of fresh fruit
- sausage - both links or patties go well
- bacon
- hashbrowns
Ingredients
- Texas toast
- all-purpose flour
- buttermilk
- salt
- eggs
- cinnamon, ground
- vanilla extract
- granulated sugar
How to Make
Step 1: Heat a skillet with a tablespoon of butter over medium heat.
Step 2: Combine dry ingredients: flour, salt, cinnamon, and sugar into a shallow dish.
Step 3: Add eggs and mix into dry ingredients. It will be thick, but by doing it this way, you'll get all the dry ingredients to combine easier than if you add the buttermilk first.
Step 4: Mix in the vanilla extract. Next, slowly add in the buttermilk, making sure to stir well. You'll want to make sure to scrape any bits of flour or other ingredients off the bottom of the container.
Step 5: After everything is mixed together well, you'll dip a slice of bread into the egg mixture and then flip the bread so the other side is coated as well.
Step 6: Place the bread covered in egg mixture into the skillet. Cook until the bottom is a golden brown, then flip the bread over and cook the other side. I like to add in another dollop of butter when I flip the bread over. This helps the French toast not burn. If you have enough room in your skillet or on your griddle, add more slices of bread covered in the egg mix to it.
Step 7: Once the French toast is done, place it on a plate. And continue cooking the rest of the bread slices as you did the first one.
Enjoy!
