Ingredients for Philly Cheesesteak Sliders
Steak: Freezing the steak slightly can make slicing it thinly easier.
Green Bell Pepper: Thinly slice the pepper for quick cooking. You can substitute with another color if you prefer.
Onion: Thinly sliced. White or yellow onions are preferred for their sweet flavor profile when cooked.
Slider Buns: Miniature versions of hoagie rolls can work well for an authentic touch.
Butter: Melted. Use unsalted butter to control the saltiness of the sliders. Half will be used for sautéing the vegetables and half for brushing the buns.
Provolone Cheese Slices: Provolone is traditional, but you can experiment with other cheeses like American or mozzarella for a different flavor.
Olive Oil: For cooking. Choose a good quality extra virgin olive oil for a hint of peppery flavor.
Seasonings: Salt and pepper. Adjust these according to your taste.
How to Make Philly Cheesesteak Sliders
To prepare Philly Cheesesteak Sliders, start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Then, take a skillet and over medium heat, cook your thinly sliced beef until it's no longer pink, setting it aside once done.
In the same skillet, add a bit of oil if needed, and sauté onions and bell peppers until they're soft.
Grab a large baking dish and place the bottom halves of the slider buns in it.
Brush the bottom of the slider buns with the melted butter, making sure to reserve the rest of the melted butter.
Spread the cooked steak over the bottom buns evently. Then, top it with the cooked peppers and onions.
Finish it off by topping it with slices of the provolone cheese and placing the top buns on top.
Brush the reserved melted butter over the top of the buns.
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is perfectly melted.
Once baked to perfection - the cheese is melted and the sliders are heated through, take them out of the oven and they're ready to serve. This method melds the flavors beautifully, creating mouthwatering sliders that are perfect for any gathering.
Tips & Tricks to Make the Best Philly Cheesesteak Sliders
Here’s a list of tips, tricks, and variations for your Philly cheesesteak sliders.
Meat Slicing: Freeze the steak for about 30 minutes before slicing to make it easier to cut thin, even slices.
Slicing Vegetables: Use a mandoline slicer for the onions and green peppers to get uniform, thin slices. Make sure you wear a cutting glove when using the mandoline.
Cheese: While provolone is traditional, feel free to experiment with other cheeses like American for a creamier texture or pepper jack for a spicy kick.
Bun Preparation: Lightly toasting the inside of the slider buns before assembling will help prevents them from getting soggy from the steak and vegetable juices.
Customization: Add mushrooms or swap out the green peppers for red or yellow. Incorporating a bit of garlic or Worcestershire sauce to the steak while cooking can also enhance the taste.
How to Store Leftovers
To store leftovers of Philly Cheesesteak Sliders, begin by allowing them to cool down to room temperature.
This prevents condensation inside the storage container which could make the sliders soggy.
Once cooled, place the sliders in an airtight container. If you're stacking them, use parchment paper between layers.
Store them in the fridge and aim to eat them within 3 to 4 days.
If you'd like to extend their shelf life, you can freeze the sliders.
Wrap each slider individually in plastic wrap then place them in a freezer bag, squeezing out as much air as possible before sealing. You can freeze them up to 3 months.
When you're ready to enjoy your sliders again, reheat them in the oven or microwave until thoroughly warm.
