These are incredibly easy to make and guaranteed to be a hit at holiday parties or as fun little treats for movie nights.
Ingredients for Peppermint Oreo Truffles
Oreo cookies: Crushed Oreo cookies can be done easily by placing them in a food processor or sealing them in a zip-lock bag and using a rolling pin.
Cream cheese: Make sure to pull out the cream cheese about 30-60 minutes before making to allow it time to come to room temperature and soften.
Peppermint extract: If you prefer a stronger peppermint flavor, you can add a bit more than the suggested amount. Start with a smaller amount and taste the mixture before adding more.
White chocolate chips: Melting the white chocolate chips slowly over a double boiler or in the microwave in short intervals helps to prevent burning.
Peppermint candy: Crushed peppermint candy can be done by placing the candy in a zip-lock bag and using a rolling pin. Make sure to remove any large chunks or sharp pieces. You can use candy canes or peppermint disks based on what is available. I've also purchased crushed peppermint candy sold at Winco in the bulk foods section.
How to Make Peppermint Oreo Truffles
Start by mixing the Oreos, cream cheese, and peppermint extract in a bowl until combined well.
Then, use a cookie scoop to shape the mixture into balls.
Place the balls in the refrigerator and let them chill for at least one hour.
After the balls have hardened, dip each one in melted chocolate and place them on a piece of parchment paper.
While the chocolate is still soft, sprinkle crushed peppermint candy on top.
Let the chocolate cool and harden before serving the truffles.
Tips & Tricks to Make the Best Peppermint Oreo Truffles
Here are some tips for making these:
Crush Oreos Quickly: Use a food processor to crush the Oreos into crumbs. This way is faster than smashing them in a bag.
Soften Cream Cheese: Make sure to pull the cream cheese out of the fridge beforehand. Soft cream cheese blends easier with Oreo crumbs and you might end up with chunks of cream cheese otherwise.
Speed Up Chilling: Pop the balls in the freezer instead of the fridge if you're in a hurry. About 15-20 minutes should do it.
Even Scoops: Use a small cookie scoop or melon baller to make even-sized truffle balls. This helps them chill and set up evenly.
Use a Fork: When dipping the balls in melted chocolate, use a fork to lift them out.
Decorate: You can use an assortment of ingredients to decorate. Try sprinkles, colored sugar, or a drizzle of white chocolate.
Different Chocolate: You can also experiment with different chocolate coatings. White, dark, or mint chocolate coatings are all flavors you could try.
Serve Cold: Store your truffles in the fridge until you're ready to serve. They taste great chilled and keep their shape better.
How to Store Leftovers
Stick any leftover Oreo truffles into an airtight container and they can be kept in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
