Ever wondered what to do with those big sweet onions sitting on your counter?

These Baked Onion Boils are packed with flavor and so simple to make - you just stuff them with butter and seasonings, then let your oven do the magic.

These are a unique side dish that doesn't require constant attention.

They're perfect alongside grilled meats or as part of a homestyle dinner.

Once you try these flavor-packed onions, you'll be making them regularly!

Ingredients

Ingredients: Cajun Seasoning, Old bay seasoning, onions, chili onion crunch, butter, black pepper, garlic, paprika, Italian seasoning, and salt.

Sweet onions: These are the key to a milder, sweeter flavor and work best for this recipe.

Butter: Use unsalted butter.

Chili onion crunch: If you can’t find it, try using a chili garlic sauce or a bit of red pepper flakes for heat.

Minced garlic: Fresh garlic gives the best flavor, but pre-minced garlic can save time if you're in a rush.

Seasonings: We use smoked paprika, Old Bay seasoning, Cajun seasoning blend, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.

How to Make

Preheat your oven to 375°F.

Peel the onions and carefully cut a 1-inch wide hole in the top of each onion, creating a well that goes halfway down.

Use a small spoon or butter knife to scoop out the inside, making enough space to fit the butter and seasoning.

Slice one Tablespoon of butter into two pieces and place one piece in the well of each onion.

A bowl with trimmed and cored onions and butter slices in the wells of the onions in foil.

In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter.

Once melted, stir in the chili onion crunch, minced garlic, paprika, Old Bay seasoning, Cajun seasoning, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper.

Pour the mixture evenly into the wells of the onions, spreading some of it over the sides.

Wrap each onion tightly in foil and place them in a baking dish. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the onions are fork-tender.

For an extra touch, you can broil the onions for 2-3 minutes to lightly caramelize the top, but this step is optional.

Tips & Tricks

Here are a few tips for making these onions:

Prep the onions ahead of time and store them in the fridge until you’re ready to bake. This can save time on busy days.

Add cheese like grated Parmesan or cheddar on top of the onions before broiling for a cheesy topping.

Try different seasoning blends like taco or ranch seasoning to mix up the flavors.

Leftovers/Storage

Here are some of our favorites to serve with this Onion Boil recipe:

Grilled steak: These pair together amazingly well.

F.A.Q.

Why are my onions not cooking all the way through?

The onions may be too large or the baking time might not be long enough. Try checking the onions after 60 minutes and extending the time as needed.

What if my onions are too small?

If your onions are smaller than the recipe calls for, check them earlier and reduce baking time as needed.

Can I bake more than two onions at once?

Yes, but make sure to space them out in the baking dish so they cook evenly. You may need to adjust the baking time.

What if the seasoning mixture doesn’t fit into the wells of the onions?

If there’s extra seasoning, you can spread it over the top and sides of the onions to infuse more flavor.

  • 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning blend
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning blend
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F.

    2 large sweet onions
  • Slice 1 Tablespoon of the butter into two pieces and place one piece in the well of each onion.
    2 Tablespoons butter
  • In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the remaining 1 tablespoon butter in the microwave. Into the melted butter add the chili onion crunch, minced garlic, paprika, Old Bay seasoning, Cajun seasoning, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper.
2 Tablespoons butter, 2 teaspoons chili onion crunch, 1 teaspoon minced garlic, 1 teaspoon paprika, 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning, 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning blend, 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning blend, ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Pour the mixture evenly over the two onions so it fills the center wells and spread some of the mixture over the sides of the onions.
  • Wrap each onion tightly in foil and place in a baking dish.
  • Bake the onions for 50-60 minutes, or until fork tender. Check the onions at the end of the baking time and if they’re not yet tender, continue to bake until tender, checking every 10 minutes (the baking time will depend on the size of the onions).
  • Peel the foil back from the top of the onions. Add more melted butter and seasonings if desired.
  • Optional: Set the oven to broil. Return the onions to the oven and broil for 2-3 minutes to slightly caramelize the top.

Notes

The Chili Onion Crunch I used is from Trader Joe’s. Any chili crisp would also work.
For added spice, add crushed red pepper flakes.
Additional butter and seasonings can be added after baking the onions.
Serve the onions as a side dish, over rice, or with fresh crusty bread and butter.
