This mason jar ice cream recipe is super easy to make and if you have kids, it's a great recipe for them to help with.

You don't need to use an ice cream maker or even a mixer. You simply add the ingredients to the mason jar, shake it a bit and then freeze.

I've included directions on how to make strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate flavors.

This mason jar ice cream is so good, it's sure to become a summertime favorite treat.

Alternatives

I've made vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate mason jar ice cream, but I've also mixed different flavors by using other flavors of jam. I have a bunch of homemade freezer jam and tried making marionberry as well as boysenberry ice cream and they were both incredibly delicious!

Try mixing up the flavor with your favorite jam flavors. If the jam is incredibly sweet, you may want to use a little less sugar.

You can also try adding some toppings to your mason jar ice cream, such as whipped cream, strawberry sauce, caramel sauce, nuts, or whatever your favorite toppings are.

Leftovers

If you end up with any leftovers, you can keep it in the freezer. Just keep the lid on the mason jar and it is good to go.

Ingredients

Choose your flavor. The ingredients are the same, except for the flavoring.

Base Ice Cream Ingredients & Vanilla

  • cold heavy whipping cream
  • cane sugar (or honey)
  • real vanilla extract
  • salt

Strawberry

  • strawberry jam

Chocolate

  • baking cocoa

How to Make

Step 1: In a pint mason jar, add all the ingredients for your desired flavor. Each jar makes 2 servings.

Step 2: After adding all the ingredients to your jar, you'll add the lid on to your mason jar. Unlike when canning, you want to make sure your lid is on tightly. The metal lids and bands work the best for this. The plastic lids don't have a seal and will leak when shaking, so make sure you use the metal lid and band or the newer plastic lids with the seal.

Step 3: This is the part where having kids comes in handy and they think it is fun. Shake your jar for about 5 to 6 minutes. The mixture will thicken up while you shake and when you are done shaking, you should be able to see that it is thicker.

Step 4: Double check and make sure the lid is on tight, then place the mason jars in the freezer. You'll want to leave it in the freezer for 3 to 4 hours, but it's better if you leave it in there overnight.

Step 5: Pull the jars out of the freezer, unscrew the caps and you can either move the ice cream to a bowl or eat directly from the jars.
