Shredded Chicken in the Instant Pot
I love using my Instant Pot to cook chicken.
This shredded chicken recipe is great when you need shredded chicken for recipes such as buffalo chicken sliders, buffalo chicken wraps, buffalo chicken nachos, and more.
We used thawed - not frozen chicken breasts for this recipe. We have not tested this recipe with chicken thighs, but we'll update this post as soon as we do.
Tips
- Make sure to use boneless, skinless chicken breasts.
- If you know you'll need shredded chicken later in the week, this is an easy thing to prep out ahead of time during your weekly meal prep. The chicken stays moist for about 3 days, so as long as you use it during the beginning of the week, within a day or two of cooking it, you are good.
How to Shred Chicken
Using Forks
If you want to shred the chicken with forks, you'll want to use two forks.
Use a fork with your non-dominant hand to hold down a piece of chicken and using a fork in your other hand, pull it through the chicken. The chicken will start to "shred". Continue doing this until you've shredded the chicken to your liking.
Using a Mixer
Using a hand mixer to shred the chicken makes it quick and easy.
In a bowl with the chicken, turn the mixer on and "mix" the chicken. While it mixes, the chicken will shred.
You can also use a stand mixer by putting the cooked chicken in the bowl of a stand mixer and turning the mixer on with the paddle attachment. Turn the mixer on speed 2 or 3 and mix until the chicken is shredded to your liking.

Storage
This is a great recipe that makes a perfectly moist chicken. If you have extra or more chicken than you can eat in one sitting, store it in an airtight container in your fridge for up to three days.
Ingredients
chicken breast: make sure to use boneless, skinless chicken breasts. If the chicken has bones, it may not be completely cooked through.
spices: I used salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. You can easily swap this out for something different or add additional spices as well.
cooking liquid: you need to make sure to add a cup of liquid to prevent the chicken from burning. I used chicken broth. You can use water or a different type of broth if you prefer.
How to Make
Add to Instant Pot: In the liner of the Instant Pot add in the chicken, sprinkle the seasoning on top, then pour the broth around the chicken.
Cook: Seal the Instant Pot, making sure the steam release valve is in the "sealing" position. Pressure cook on high pressure with a cook time of 10 minutes. Once this time is up, let it naturally release for 5 minutes, then do a quick release for any remaining pressure. Once all the pressure is out of the Instant Pot and the float pin has dropped down, take the lid off, making sure top open it facing away from you. This way any steam can escape and not burn you.
Shred: You can shred the chicken in the Instant Pot or remove the cooked chicken and place in a bowl. You can use either a hand mixer or a fork to shred chicken breasts.
Enjoy!
