Air Fryer Pumpkin Apple Fries
These air fryer apple fries have all the flavors of fall including not only apple, but cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice as well.
Air Fryer Apple Fries with Pumpkin Spice
Fall is just around the corner and with it comes apples and more apples.
I live in the Pacific NW and we have a local apple farm that my family loves to visit each year. They grow so many different types of apples and it's fun to go there, take a hay ride around to see the different trees, and then bring home an assortment of apple varieties.
This apple fry recipe is perfect for using up some of these apples.
You can make these air fryer apple fries any time of the year. It doesn't have to be made only during Fall.
You just need some apples and a few other simple ingredients.
Ingredients
Apples: Choose firm apples like Granny Smith for the best results.
Eggs: Eggs act as a binder, helping the flour mixture stick to the apple wedges.
Vanilla Extract: Vanilla enhances the sweetness of the apples.
Pumpkin Spice: You can make your own blend or use a pre-made mix.
Cinnamon: A classic pairing with apples, cinnamon adds a warm, sweet-spicy flavor.
Flour: Flour creates a light batter for the apple wedges, giving them a crispy exterior when air fried.
Sugar
Oil Spray: A light spray of oil helps the apple fries crisp up in the air fryer.
How to Make Air Fryer Apple Fries
Start by peeling the apples and cutting them into wedges.
Prepare two mixing bowls - in one, whisk together the eggs and vanilla, and in the other, combine the pumpkin spice, half of the cinnamon, and flour.
Dip each apple wedge into the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture, and back into the flour mixture.
This double-dipping process makes sure you get a good coating on the apple wedges.
Place the battered wedges into the air fryer basket and give them a light spray with oil.
Cook the apple wedges at 320°F for about 13 minutes in the air fryer.
While the apple fries are cooking, prepare a ziplock bag with the remaining cinnamon and sugar.
Once the apple fries are done, toss them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat.
Serve the apple fries warm with your choice of dipping sauce, like caramel or whipped cream.
Enjoy this sweet and crispy treat!
Best Apple Varieties to Use
We used Granny Smith apples to make these. The reason we are particular to Granny Smith is that the tartness with this apple does such a great job countering the sweetness of the coating and the dip.
You can use other apples if you prefer.
You want to use an apple that will hold up to the high temperature and not become mushy, so any apples you'd typically use for baking are great for this recipe.
Some good ones to try include:
- Gala
- Braeburn
- Gravenstein
- Honey Crisp
- Pink Lady
- Cortland
Tips for Making the Best Apple Fries
Here are some tips to make the best Air Fryer Apple Fries:
Single Layer: Make sure the apple wedges are arranged in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Overlapping can lead to uneven cooking and less crispy fries.
Air Basket Liner or Oil Spray: To prevent the apple fries from sticking to the basket, consider using an air basket liner or spray your basket with olive oil. This not only prevents sticking but also helps to keep the coating on the apple fries intact.
Oil Spray for Crispiness: If you prefer your apple fries extra crispy, don't forget to spray them with some oil before air frying. This helps to achieve a nice, crispy exterior.
Choice of Apples: Use firm apples like Granny Smith for the best results. These apples hold up well during cooking and provide a nice sweet-tart flavor.
Leftovers
If you end up with leftovers you can store them for later, although apple fries are definitely best eaten fresh.
Place leftovers in an air tight container and store in the fridge for up to 3 days.
When you are ready to reheat them, stick them in the air fryer and cook at 400F for 1-3 minutes.
