Apple Chips

I love fall, it's the season of freshly picked apples, plus cinnamon and spice scents everywhere.

If you have an abundance of apples that you need to figure out what to do with them, you'll love making them into apple chips.

Plus apple chips are healthier than our favorite potato chips. So, it's the perfect healthy snack idea.

They have a naturally sweet flavor from the apples and are super delicious.

Making apple chips in an air fryer is convenient, easy, fast, and healthy. It takes 20 to 30 minutes to get perfectly air-fried apple chips on the plate.

The best thing about these chips is that you can make them in batches and store them. So whenever you crave something sweet, they are ready.

Ingredients

Apples: The type of apple you use can greatly affect the flavor of your apple chips. Granny Smith apples are a popular choice for their tart flavor, but feel free to experiment with your favorite varieties. Just make sure to choose firm apples that will hold up well during cooking.

Sugar: This will add a touch of sweetness to your apple chips.

Ground Cinnamon: Feel free to adjust the amount to suit your taste.

Oil: A light coating of oil helps the apple slices crisp up in the air fryer. You can use any neutral-flavored oil like canola or vegetable oil.

How to Make Apple Chips

Start by slicing your apples into thin slices. You can use a mandoline slicer for uniformity, but a sharp knife will also do the job. The key is to keep the slices thin but not too thin, as they need to hold up during cooking.

Next, mix together your ground cinnamon and sugar.

Once your apple slices are prepared, lightly spray them with oil and sprinkle them with your cinnamon sugar mixture. Be sure to do this on both sides.

Arrange the apple slices sporadically in your air fryer basket. You want to avoid overcrowding the basket so they cook evenly.

Cook the slices at 300F for 20 minutes, shaking the basket every 5 minutes.

After 20 minutes, check your apple slices. They should look dry at this point.

Increase the temperature to 325F and cook for an additional 2 minutes.

Finally, remove your apple chips from the air fryer and let them sit for 5-10 minutes.

Enjoy your homemade apple chips as a healthy and delicious snack!

Best Apples to Use

There are hundreds of different types of apples in the world.

When you visit a grocery store, you will find several in front of you, and choosing the one that is perfect for apple chips might seem like a big decision.

The thing is, you can choose any kind you want.

Here are some good choices to use if it seems overwhelming:

  • Goldrush
  • Gala
  • Granny Smith
  • Fuji
  • Pink Lady
  • Honeycrisp
  • Empire

All these varieties are naturally sweet.

How Long do Apple Chips Last

Place them into an airtight container or jar on the kitchen counter, and the apple chips are good to go for about 5 to 7 days.

However, you want to make sure they are completely cool before storing them.

If you store warm apple chips, they can develop condensation and the crispiness will be lost.

  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 Tablespoons oil

Instructions

  • Using a mandoline slicer or knife, slice the apples into thin slices. Lay slices on parchment paper.
  • Mix cinnamon and sugar until well combined.
  • Spray the apple slices with oil and season with cinnamon sugar, repeat on other side
  • Place the apple slices in air fryer basket, making sure the overlap is minimized.
  • Cook slices on 300 for 20 minutes, shaking the slices every 5 minutes. Once slices look dry, increase the temp to 325 and cook for 2 more minutes.

Notes

Choose crisp apples like Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Granny Smith for the best texture. Sweeter apples like Gala or Pink Lady work well if you prefer a sweeter chip without adding extra sugar.
Air fryers vary in power, so check the apple chips frequently towards the end of the cooking time to avoid burning. They should be crisp and slightly golden.
